The Night Agent Season 3: Everything to Know About the Next Season of Netflix's Thriller

What is Peter Sutherland's next mission?

The Night Agent isn't taking a break. If you've binged all of Season 2 — which is really the only way to watch the series — then you're probably wondering if Season 3 is coming. The good news is that yes, Season 3 is in the works, and the wait between Seasons 2 and 3 won't be as long as the wait between the first two seasons, because Netflix wants as much The Night Agent as it can get.

That's because Shawn Ryan's thriller, based on Matthew Quirk's novel, is arguably Netflix's most surprising hit. The first season is one of the streamer's most-watched English language TV series of all time, and Season 2 had no problem occupying the No. 1 spot on the Top 10 in dozens of countries shortly after its release in late January 2025. This franchise could be around for a long time.

The Night Agent stars Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland Jr., a low-level FBI agent who makes his way into the top-secret Night Action organization after uncovering treason in the White House and saving the president's life in Season 1. In Season 2, Peter becomes a full-fledged Night Agent and stops a terrorist attack on New York City. By his side is Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a tech whiz who has helped Peter since her aunt and uncle were murdered, which set off a series of events that led Peter into the jaws of the conspiracy. And of course, Peter and Rose develop a romance during their missions, but it's complicated by their jobs as well as by the assassins trying to kill them at every turn.

We're still getting early intel on Season 3 of The Night Agent, but that doesn't mean we can't start asking questions about a release date, what the new season will be about, and more.

The Night Agent Season 3 latest news

The cast is coming together. On Jan. 31, Deadline reported that Fola Evans-Akingbola (who plays Chelsea Arrington), Ward Horton (who plays Governor Hagan), and Albert Jones (who plays Deputy Director Aiden Mosley) have all been promoted to series regular for Season 3. Read more in the cast section below.

The Night Agent Season 3 release date

There's no premiere date for Season 3 yet, as it's still in production. Gotta film it all before you can release it, right? However, because parts of Season 3 were written before Season 2 even aired, it's safe to say that the wait between seasons won't be as long as the 22-month-long wait between Seasons 1 and 2, which was affected by the actors and writers strikes. We'd guess that Season 3 will premiere sometime in 2026.

The Night Agent Season 3 renewal and production

On Oct. 8, 2024, months before Season 2 aired, Netflix renewed the series for a third season. Filming on Season 3 began in 2024.

Unless there's a huge departure from the information we were given at the end of the Season 2 finale, the plot of Season 3 was plainly laid out on screen. After trading sensitive information about presidential candidate Patrick Knox (Geoffrey Owens) to Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum) in exchange for vital information on Rose's whereabouts (and the location of the lab making the chemical weapon), Peter inadvertently swayed the presidential election in Governor Hagan's (Ward Horton) favor, became Jacob's inside source in the government, and established a dangerous relationship that will continue in Season 3.

However, Catherine (Amanda Warren) informed Peter that his info swap would be used to help him in his new mission: to find out exactly what the nature of Jacob and Governor Hagan's relationship is. Peter will probably need to play multiple sides here, keeping Jacob close enough to him so he can learn more about the freelance information dealer and the soon-to-be president while also maintaining his duties as a Night Agent.

"Peter falls in the middle of an awkward and uncomfortable place — he's between two very powerful people that may be up to no good," Shawn Ryan told Tudum. "That will be an interesting question in Season 3: Who's really in control of that relationship — President Hagan or Jacob Monroe?"

Where will The Night Agent Season 3 take place?

After spending most of Season 1 in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area, early episodes of Season 2 were set in Bangkok, Thailand, while the rest of the season took place in New York City. We don't know where Season 3 will be set, but we do know that filming is already underway in Istanbul, Turkey, and will move to New York City. This doesn't mean that Season 3 will be set in Turkey, as the country could substitute for another locale, but it looks like Peter is headed somewhere in the Middle East or the Mediterranean in Season 3.

Star Gabriel Basso is confirmed to return for Season 3 as Peter Sutherland, but don't think that will be automatic in every season moving forward. Speaking with Variety, Basso hinted that his days as an actor might be over soon, at least for a while.

"I'm probably going to take a break. ... And it would be doing the audience a disservice if every season, [Peter] was fine," Basso told Variety. "At some point, the audience would be like, I get it now. No one wants to see someone who's untouchable. When you're watching the Captain America movie, you know Captain America's not going to die."

As for Basso's co-lead, Luciane Buchanan is not yet guaranteed to appear in Season 3, even though her character, Rose, has been such an integral part of the first two seasons. As Season 2 ended, Peter was given an even more dangerous and more top-secret mission, while Rose left for California to pursue more of her career in tech. TV Guide asked showrunner Shawn Ryan how Rose could possibly be included in Season 3, given how hard it's been for Peter and Rose to maintain a regular relationship.

"Well, we'll see if we even do [include Rose in Season 3]," Ryan told TV Guide just before the premiere of Season 2. "There is a challenge with Peter and Rose. Their two lifestyles at this point, now that he's become a Night Agent, are very different. He's not working a 9-to-5 job where he can come home. They live on two different coasts. They live in two different worlds. And so one of the things I think our show will have to decide in the long term is what the future is between Peter and Rose. And certainly, I think at the end of Season 2, we posit the question, is there a future? And that's something that we're working on, and if so, what it would look like, and we'll see. So even though we're working on Season 3, there's still a lot that could change."

Here's what we know for sure: Deadline reports that Fola Evans-Akingbola will return as Chelsea Arrington and has been promoted to series regular. Evans-Akingbola was a regular in Season 1 but only appeared briefly Season 2. Ward Horton, who plays Governor Hagan, has also been promoted to series regular, as has Albert Jones, who plays Deputy Director Aiden Mosley.

Netflix has also announced new cast members coming to Season 3, and they're some of the show's biggest names yet. According to DeadlineDavid Lyons (The Cape) will play a former spy, Jennifer Morrison (Once Upon a Time) will play the first lady, Stephen Moyer (True Blood) will play an assassin, and Genesis Rodriguez (Lioness) will play a reporter. Child actor Callum Vinson (Chucky) has also joined the cast.

Given how important information dealer and government string-puller Jacob Monroe is to Peter's next mission, we expect Louis Herthum to return. Amanda Warren, who debuted in Season 2 as Peter's new handler, Catherine, is also a good bet to reprise her role, since Peter's next mission is so top secret that only a handful of people, Catherine included, know about it. There's also the potential for more Season 1 cast members to return, including Hong Chau as Diane Farr, who is currently in prison.

The Night Agent Season 3 cast:

  • Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland
  • Fola Evans-Akingbola as Chelsea Arrington
  • Ward Horton as Governor Richard Hagan
  • Albert Jones as Deputy Director Aiden Mosley
  • David Lyons
  • Jennifer Morrison
  • Stephen Moyer
  • Genesis Rodriguez
  • Callum Vinson

We'll update this list as more cast members are confirmed.

The Night Agent spin-offs might be in the works

Back in June 2024, The Night Agent creator Shawn Ryan signed a four-year deal with Netflix, Deadline reports, which successfully lured him away from Sony. So what, you say? Well, that means good things for The Night Agent; in addition to the third season renewal, it's theorized that Netflix might expand the series' universe with spin-offs, just as Netflix spun off The Witcher and Bridgerton.
