We haven't seen the last of elderly Dexter Morgan
Dexter: Resurrection
We're officially in the era of the Dark Passenger, or at least we are if Showtime has anything to say about it. It's been more than a decade since Michael C. Hall's Dexter wrapped with the lead character sailing off into a hurricane, but talks of a spinoff never stopped. Still, who could have predicted that in 2025 we would have three franchise spinoffs gracing our streaming queues?
Hot on the heels of Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Original Sin is this summer's newest franchise spinoff, Dexter: Resurrection. The series is a continuation of New Blood, which continued the original series, but is closely intertwined with Original Sin, the prequel series that just premiered in December.
As we learn more about Dexter's origins and the code that made him into the Bay Harbor Butcher he is today, here's what we know about the upcoming sequel and how it ties into this bloody universe.
More on Dexter:
Deadline reports that James Remar and David Zayas, who had major roles in the original series as Dexter's father Harry (Remar) and Detective Batista (Zayas), will both also appear in the new series. While Harry is long dead, his image has served as a sort of hallucinatory guide for Dexter so his return isn't really surprising. Detective Batista, meanwhile, finally learned Dexter's big secret at the end of New Blood, so it would have been more surprising if he weren't returning.
On top of those two actors, Jack Alcott is returning as Dexter's son Harrison, who we first met on New Blood.
Resurrection picks up where New Blood left off, with Harrison (Jack Alcott) shooting his father in the snow. Despite previous confirmation from showrunner Clyde Phillips that the character was dead, it seems that's no longer the case.
As we saw in the opening moments of Original Sin, doctors got Dexter's heart beating again, and the cold essentially saved him. The twist set up the prequel, as Dexter looked back on the decisions made by his younger self (played by Patrick Gibson). However, it also sets up Resurrection.
"In the beginning of Resurrection, the doctor says to Dexter, 'Had you been shot in the summertime, you'd be dead, but you were shot in zero-degree weather. And we ripped you open, and were able to get you minutes before you died,'" Phillips explained to TV Insider.
How Dexter (played again by Hall) returns and what he'll be up to is unclear. At this point, the series could follow him in jail, or it could follow him on the run in New York City. It could also kill him and make him Harrison's ghostly Dark Passenger the way Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) and Harry (James Remar) were to Dexter. The fan theories are endless, and others have speculated a jury could let him go since his code only had him murdering actual killers.
We also know that Resurrection won't be a limited series, and there is potential for several seasons. Given that information, we'd like to add the theory that Dexter somehow works with police to hunt down other serial killers and struggles to contain his Dark Passenger when he can't kill.
Dexter: Resurrection begins filming in January and is scheduled to debut on Showtime and Paramount+ in Summer 2025.
The first teaser for Dexter: Resurrection aired before the premiere of Dexter: Original Sin, and it doesn't really reveal anything at all — as of December, Resurrection hasn't begun filming. But it does at least let us know that we haven't seen the last of Mr. Morgan.
Hall is back as the titular character, and rest of the regular cast includes Jack Alcott as Dexter's son Harrison, James Remar as Dexter's dead dad Harry, and David Zayas as Detective Batista, all of whom return from the original series. In an interview with Variety, Hall hinted that, "There's a whole cast of characters that populate his wider world and have the potential to re-emerge."
Rumors have been circulating, of course. So far, there are unconfirmed reports that Peter Dinklage and Gillian Anderson may join the cast.
Behind the scenes, Phillips is back to showrun the series while long-time writer Scott Reynolds is also on board. Marcos Siega, who directed some of the original series and directed/executive produced New Blood, is also back as one of Resurrection's directors.
The entire original series and the 10-episode sequel Dexter: New Blood are now streaming on Paramount+, but both can also be found on other streaming services.
