Ted Lasso Season 4: Will It Happen, Potential Spin-offs, and Everything Else We Know

There's probably going to be more Ted Lasso coming, but will Ted Lasso himself actually be in it?

When the third season finale of Ted Lasso dropped way back in 2023, it was just that — a season finale rather than a series finale, even though it seemed like a pretty conclusive ending. At the time, multiple people involved in the show, including star and co-creator Jason Sudeikis, cryptically said it was the end of the story they wanted to tell, with some adding "for now" to keep things even more nebulous. Given its huge success, Warner Bros TV and Apple were unsurprisingly intent on staying in the Ted Lasso business, but even now, in 2025, we still don't quite know what that means. Yet.

For three seasons,Ted Lasso followed the highs and lows (and sometimes low lows) of AFC Richmond, a fictional Premier League soccer team. When the Apple TV+ comedy series premiered in August 2020, viewers were instantly captivated by the titular Ted Lasso (played by Sudeikis) and his big heart and Midwestern charm. He was buoyed by the incredible cast of characters surrounding him and the actors playing those characters — which led to the show receiving numerous awards, including two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series.

But when Season 3 played out over the spring of 2023, fans became more and more unhappy with the show's final storylines. That, coupled with the fact that there were only three seasons of the show, left many feeling the series ended too soon. When the final episode aired on May 31, 2023, fans were left wondering: Could there be a Season 4 of Ted Lasso? Could there be a Ted Lasso spin-off? The answer may not be a simple one.

Will there absolutely, definitely be a Season 4 of Ted Lasso?

It's been nearly two years since Ted Lasso Season 3 dropped its final episode, and we actually don't have a firm answer to this question. The trades reported back in August that Season 4 was close to a greenlight, with Apple picking up the contract options for Hannah Waddingham (AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins). Since then, however, there's been little but vague comments from the cast and crew — and Season 4 of Ted Lasso still has not officially been announced.

But it's safe to assume that the story told in Ted Lasso will continue on in some form — though whether that's in Ted Lasso Season 4, or Season 1 of a show with a different title, may still be up in the air. Something appears to be happening — we just don't know what it is yet.

The confusion here likely revolves around the fact that when Ted Lasso Season 3 aired back in 2023, it was the end of the story, according to co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis.

"This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell," Sudeikis told Deadline a week before the Season 3 premiere. But this wasn't new information: He had told Entertainment Weekly back in June 2021 that the series was envisioned with a three-season arc in mind.

Co-creator and head writer Bill Lawrence, meanwhile, discussed a potential Season 4 with the Los Angeles Times in late 2024, and the way he described whatever is in the works made it sound like it's simultaneously a new season of Ted Lasso and a spinoff series. "I don't want to speak for [Jason Sudeikis], but it'd be interesting to see that there's always another story to tell with characters that people like, but it's a different story. It's almost a self-reboot. I think that he [Jason] always had in his head another story he wanted to tell."

So, to answer the question: Ted Lasso Season 4 is definitely in the works. Whether it's the same Ted Lasso you remember is a different question — it could ultimately be a spinoff in the guise of a new season, depending on who ends up coming back.

Where Ted Lasso Season 3 left off

In the final episode, Ted decided to return back to the U.S. to be near his son in Kansas. After saying goodbye to his team, he handed over head coaching duties to Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein). His final act was to encourage Trent Crimm (James Lance), who was about to publish a book about AFC Richmond, to change the name from The Lasso Way to The Richmond Way. "It's not about me," Ted told him. "It never was."

And then Ted was all the way out of the picture.

Ted Lasso season 4 potential storylines

It would be a little bit weird to continue to focus on the standard day-to-day of life at AFC Richmond without Ted as the coach, and it would similarly be weird to simply bring Ted back as coach. Fortunately, one leftover thread from the Season 3 finale would make for a suitable pivot: Keeley (Juno Temple) convinced Rebecca to start an AFC Richmond women's team. That thread is actually the only reported plot focus for Season 4 so far, and it makes sense. With that focus, you get to stay in the same environment while moving onto a different story — and it would fit that "self-reboot" description quite well.

Ted Lasso Season 4 potential release date

Since we don't have an official announcement about any further Ted Lasso stuff yet, we also don't have a date for the Season 4 premiere. But we're not completely clueless — actor Nick Mohammed, who plays Nate, recently rescheduled his summer comedy tour for "some filming that I've not been able to shift," which set off a firestorm of speculation that Ted Lasso Season 4 would shoot this summer. And that would line up with the report that Season 4 would focus on AFC Richmond's women's team, which mentioned a May/June filming start.

If that timing is true, it's extremely doubtful that we'll see Season 4 before the end of the year. Expect Season 4 to premiere in 2026.

Will there be a Ted Lasso spin-off?

There hasn't been any word on any spin-offs since the buzz about Season 4 ramped up back in August. Considering that Season 4 still isn't actually official, we can't say.

Where to watch Ted Lasso
