Prime Video rang in the new year with some big names. Headlining the streamer's new movies and shows in January was Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon's comedy You're Cordially Invited, in which two families who don't care for each other are accidentally booked to host weddings at the same venue on the same day. And in the middle of the month, Prime Video had exclusive broadcasting rights to an NFL playoff game.

January also saw Prime Video streaming Zoë Kravitz's wacko horror film Blink Twice, starring Channing Tatum; the full series of How to Get Away With Murder and Monk; and new seasons of Prime Video originals The Rig, Harlem, and Tribunal Justice.

Below, you'll find our picks for the best shows and movies to watch on Amazon Prime Video in January, as well as the full list of everything coming to Prime Video.

The best new movies and shows on Prime Video in January

Emily Hampshire, The Rig

The Rig Season 2 (Jan. 2)

After spending the first season stuck on an oil rig in the North Sea battling unknown behavior-altering parasites and each other, the crew is moved to a new rig in the Arctic Circle to contend with a new subaquatic threat (and each other). What are the odds? Pretty high when you have a competent British thriller starring Game of Thrones' Iain Glen, Schitt's Creek's Emily Hampshire, and Line of Duty's Martin Compston heading into Season 2. [Trailer]

NFL Wild Card Game (Jan. 11)

After taking over Thursday Night Football the last two seasons, Prime Video hosts its first NFL playoff game in the Wild Card round as the NFL continues to experiment with exclusive streaming partners (Peacock hosted a playoff game last season). The streamer gets the nightcap of Saturday's first-round games, and it's a good one featuring one of football's best rivalries. The Pittsburgh Steelers head to the Baltimore Ravens for another battle of these AFC North enemies who don't like each other. This will be the third meeting between the teams; they each won one in the regular season, with Baltimore winning the most recent matchup 34-17 on Dec. 21.

Blink Twice (Jan. 21)

Thanks to movies like Midsommar and Bodies Bodies Bodies, "fun parties gone murderously wrong" is now one of the most delightful horror subgenres, and that continues with the Zoë Kravitz-directed Blink Twice. Channing Tatum stars as a billionaire who invites two friends (Naomi Ackie and Alia Shawkat) to his private island for some hedonistic adventures with his pals. It all goes great, until it doesn't, and people begin disappearing. [Trailer]

You're Cordially Invited (Jan. 30)

Megawatt movie stars Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon star in this romantically charged comedy that has me skeptical of its quality, because if it were good, it would be in theaters and not headed straight to streaming, right? But maybe the business is changing and good movies can actually be streaming exclusives even when the studio creating them is a major theatrical player. Who knows?! In You're Cordially Invited, Ferrell is planning his daughter's wedding and Witherspoon is planning her sister's wedding, and they both reserve a venue that makes the criminal mistake of double booking, resulting in both weddings taking place on the same day. Ferrell and Witherspoon will dominate the marquee, but I'll watch for two of my favorites: Meredith Hagner as Witherspoon's sister and Keyla Monterroso Mejia as Ferrell's inept wedding planner. [Trailer]
